EPCOT's beloved Spaceship Earth is about ready to be re-opened. The icon of EPCOT will be re-opening in the next week or so after an extensive five-month refurbishment.
Changes have been made to content, new interactive components have been added and enhancements to items that have been a part of the attraction since its original opening have been completed.
The attraction, which has always centered around communication through the ages, has been changed to be about inspiration and innovation. A new narrator, Judi Dench, guides riders through the years. None of the scenes at the beginning of the attraction have been changed (the Egyptians, the burning of Rome, the Renaissance, the switchboard, etc...through to the 1960s living room) but the elements have been repositioned and upgraded. Each have been given new lights and costume and some of the audio-animatronics have become more lifelike (pay close attention to the Greek teacher and a Roman soldier to see these advances).
Where guests will notice the most changes though begins near the apex of the sphere and continues on the ride back down. WDW has added new sets representing the invention of the computer mainframe and the garage where the PC was developed. As riders make their way back down the sphere they'll be given seven questions about their future to be answered on touch screens (i.e. Do you prefer the journey or the destination? While away, do you worry more about your home or you pet?). Then all the answers are combined into a piece of retro-yet-futuristic cartoon for each row.
Other changes to the attraction have been made to blend the old and the new. The 1960s living room now steers attention to the 1969 moon landing on television and more. There are also more elements to come later including language options selected by passengers, which will be a Disney first, and more post-show exhibits.
Update: 12/7/2007
Spaceship Earth has been significantly updated with changes to many scenes and new narrator and a new musical score. The Ride is official re-opening Feburary 18th, but sneak previews are expected during December. We will try our best to get out there and get some of the first pictures and video of the updated attraction.
Disney-Philes are also very pleased that the "Wand" that used to appear over Spaceship Earth has been removed to bring back the sphere to it simple elegance.
Old Description
Spaceship Earth, the "Icon" of Epcot, was updated at the end of the millennium celebration. This huge geosphere (which takes up approx. 2 million cubic feet of space), now sports a Mickey wand waving the word EPCOT. Inside this huge sphere you can find the ride by the same name. It shows the story of human communication from the time of the caveman through ancient Egypt, Rome, Renaissance Italy, and up to present time.
